Finding a shared flat in Germany
Where to search
The main platforms for shared flats are WG-Gesucht, Immobilienscout24 and classifieds sites. Also check the Studentenwerk housing exchange, department notice boards and your university's Facebook groups. Listings often get dozens of replies within an hour – a fast, personal message matters.
Your application message
Write briefly and concretely: who are you, what do you study, when can you move in and for how long? One or two personal sentences make the difference. Avoid standard texts that read like a mass message.
Viewing and contract
At the viewing, check internet, utilities, house rules, noise and transport links. The contract should clearly state whether you are a main tenant, co-tenant or subtenant. Put utilities and deposit in writing – for sublets always with the main tenant's consent.
Beware of scams
Serious landlords never ask for money before a viewing. Be cautious with overseas landlords who only communicate by email, or "pay the deposit, we'll mail the key" offers. Meet during the day, bring someone along, and view the room before paying anything.
