Health insurance for students
Insurance obligation
In Germany, proof of health insurance is required for enrolment. Students covered by statutory insurance usually stay in family insurance or switch to the discounted student tariff. Contributions consist of the base amount plus the insurer's individual supplement – check current figures on your insurer's website.
Statutory or private
For most students, statutory student insurance is the cheapest and simplest option. Private student insurance can make sense under specific conditions (e.g. children of civil servants, older students, pre-existing conditions). Compare benefits, premium adjustments and options to switch back carefully before deciding.
Registration and proof
Choose an insurer, apply for student insurance and submit the insurance certificate to your university. If family insurance is not possible, look into insurers with a low supplementary contribution and hardship provisions.
Plan before your 30th birthday
The discounted student tariff usually ends at your 30th birthday. Plan the switch to voluntary or private insurance in time, and check hardship or extension rules with your insurer if your studies take longer.
